Fifteen

EVIE: DECLAN'S KEYS are in my hand as I wait in the reception area at the local police station. I stare down at them, lost in my thoughts, my thumb running over the jagged edge of his house key. Declan. Why is he so hard to figure out? Hard one minute and soft the next. He said he wants me to stay with him. Why? I was so sure he hated me until he saved me.

“Evie?”

“Hmm?” I close my fist tight around the keys and look up, offering Detective Russell a half smile. As I stand he approaches me. He lightly puts his arm around me, resting his hand on the small of my back. My shoulders stiffen, not exactly comfortable with him touching me. I suppose that’s normal. I suppose I should be a little shaken, but it’s so different from who I am that it makes me even more upset about what’s happened. It makes me downright angry.

He guides me to his office, past a small army of officer’s workspaces, where most of the desks are empty. One of them looks up, narrowing his eyes as if he knows me. I look away, uncomfortable. I take a seat in one of the chairs in front of Russell's desk. It’s a small space and incredibly disorganized. There are papers everywhere and he has to move some file folders to make room for me to sit. He just tosses them on the floor. I take a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk.

“I was worried I might have to track you down.”

“Why is that?”

“Well, after being attacked, some women tend to fear the attackers will come back for them. They stay silent, thinking it will keep their attackers at bay.”

I shift in my seat. “And does it?”

He frowns. “Rarely.” He lifts his coffee mug up to his lips and takes a slow drink, as if his coffee is still piping hot. When he sets it down, he hands me a business card.

I take it and read the bold print: Sonya Dexter, Sexual Assault and Grief Counsellor. I glance up at him, my expression tense.

“We give her card to anyone who’s been through situations like yours. She’s a great woman and she’s helped a lot of people.”

“I don’t need counselling,” I tell him.

“Well, if you do, you have her number.”

I tuck it into the pocket of my jeans, though I don’t really want to take it with me. I just don’t want to be rude. Counselling helped me when I was younger, but I’ve gained all I can from it. I don’t need any more.

“How are you doing?” he says as he searches his desk.

“He came to my apartment.”

He stops what he’s doing and his jaw drops. “What? When?”

“I guess while I was in the hospital. He left me a message, written on the wall.”

“Why didn’t you call me? We would have sent a car over immediately!”

I shake my head, surveying the wreckage in his office while I quietly bite my nails.
